The last Saturday of April is Independent Bookstore Day here in the United States. This year, Independent Bookstore Day falls on April 27, 20224, though some places are extending the celebrations until Sunday. The American Booksellers Association calls it a party, saying that it’s a “national one-day party… [that] celebrates independent bookstores across the country online and in-store. Through exclusive books and literary items, contests, cupcakes, and everything in between, it’s a party you don’t want to miss!”
How does one party on Independent Bookstore Day? In some of the best ways possible. If you are able to visit your local booksellers, try to visit today to see if they have any special events going on. Being surrounded by all the options—new worlds to explore in fiction and new topics to learn about in nonfiction—is just wonderful. (Don’t forget to wear your mask/respirator to help make the event more accessible during this ongoing pandemic!) While I love ebooks, especially for their accessibility, for me, I love mixing it up and holding a new or new-to-me book while sitting in my reading chair or on my couch—pure bliss.
If you aren’t able to attend an event because of your schedule or lack of accessibility, you aren’t are being left out. IndieBound.org has a few asynchronous virtual events you can attend. Bookshop.org is also offering free shipping all weekend. Check out some of the books I recommend (affiliate link*).
What’s your favorite way to celebrate?
Hope you enjoy today!
